Bayfield's back! Yep, top-ten!
Two wins from an 8-0 tear through the 3A Intermountain League, Jon Qualls' Wolverines (14-3 overall) were the only 'new' team included in this week's CHSAANow.com poll, hitting #8 on Monday after plastering Pagosa Springs 11-0, 14-2 last Saturday at the Pirates' Strohecker Field.
The team has had a full week to prepare for tomorrow's Senior Day visit from Centauri. Bayfield-though eager to follow its one-at-a-time collective thinking-would seem all the more poised to present their first-year coach with such an appreciative present.
Working back into rhythm from a pulled leg muscle, junior Matt Knickerbocker not only went 2-for-5 in Game 1 against PSHS, but also notched the win with six innings [sophomore Zane Phelps tossed the seventh, and also batted 2-of-5] of three-hit, five-strikeout shutout pitching.
Fanning three in four innings, and allowing just one hit, senior Trey Lange (4-for-6 total batting, 2 2B, 4 R) was the Game 2 winner, with regular catcher Kelton McCoy used on the hill to lock it up.
Brody McGhehey was also essential to BHS' Game 1 success, going 3-4 with a walk, two stolen bases, a run, and an RBI, and Phelps was 2-3 with a double and three runs in Game 2.
CHS stood 6-7-1 overall, 2-4 IML entering their non-league game yesterday at 2A's fourth-ranked Rye (16-1, 8-0 Santa Fe) but results were unavailable to the Times prior to tomorrow's 11 a.m. start.
