BHS baseball players earn All 3A honors

Faces might fade from fans' immediate memories.unless each corresponds to a name.

And until next spring, Front Rangers baseball fans will just have to rest uneasy knowing that the names "Kelton McCoy" and "Zane Phelps" will again probably play when the 2016 State Championship Series commences.

That reminder came via the CHSAANow.com/ColoradoPreps.com/MaxPreps All-State Baseball Teams' recent release.

The Bayfield cornerstones - McCoy the Wolverines' primary catcher, Phelps the primary third baseman, and both also utilized as pitchers - were named Second Team All-3A after the Wolverines played a hard 18-5 season and a state fun-run into the Great Eight.

Joining the BHS now-seniors in receiving Second Team honors were:

Payton Chacon (Gilcrest Valley, sr., C/P), Calvin Corey (Olathe, sr., INF/P), Mikey Gutierrez (Brush, sr., INF), Tyler Husmann (Alamosa, sr., LF), Nick Kakavas (Lafayette Peak to Peak, sr., P/1B), Will McKissick (Englewood Kent Denver, jr., OF/P), Braydon Peif (Greeley University, sr., P/2B), A.J. Stephens (Arvada Faith Christian, jr., 1B/P/OF).

Eaton senior P/3B Lane Greiman-one of four Reds named First Team-was selected as 3A Player-of-the-Year after helping Eaton to a state championship and 26-1 overall season.

His team victorious over Eaton once in five total tries during 2015, Brush's Kevin Fergus was named 3A Coach-of-the-Year after the Beetdiggers finished 19-7. They not only opposed EHS in the grand finale, but actually forced the Reds into the double-elimination tournament's dreaded "if" game.

Brush, coming out of the survival stage, prevailed 4-3 to give Eaton their first series loss, before losing to their Patriot League rivals 7-1 in the season's deciding showdown.
