Bayfield’s impressive season has come to an end.
The Bayfield High School baseball team fell 10-7 to Holy Family in an elimination game at the CHSAA Class 3A Baseball State Championships on Saturday in Greeley.
The Wolverines, who saw their 17-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Faith Christian on Friday, ended their season with a 20-4 record.
It was a nip-and-tuck affair early on, with BHS jumping to a 1-0 lead after the first, only to see Holy Family rally to lead 3-1 after two innings and 4-3 after three.
The fifth-seeded Tigers (19-4) scored four runs in the fourth inning to pull ahead 8-3, only to see Bayfield answer with a pair of runs to trim the lead back to 8-5.
The third-seeded Wolverines would get no closer, and the double-digit runs allowed represented just the second time this season they’ve given up 10 or more runs.
Holy Family, which beat Kent Denver in an elimination game earlier Saturday, pulled ahead 10-5 in the sixth, and Bayfield’s rally fell three runs short.
Darren Hoselton (2-2) took the loss on the mound for Bayfield, allowing four runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched. Trey Lange allowed six runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings of relief, and Matthew Knickerbocker held Holy Family scoreless over the final 1 1/3 innings.
Lange went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk, a run scored and two runs driven in. Knickerbocker was 2-for-4 with a run scored, a run driven in and a home run for the Wolverines. Clay Miller had a hit, walked twice, scored twice and drove in a run for Bayfield, while Austin McMenimen had a hit, a sacrifice fly and two RBIs.
