The Bayfield High School volleyball team overcame a 2-1 deficit to beat Lamar in the first round of the CHSAA 3A State Volleyball Championships on Friday at the Denver Coliseum in Denver.
The Wolverines started their fifth consecutive state tournament with a 3-2 (26-24, 19-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-10) win over No. 12 Lamar (22-4).
BHS made 10 team blocks and adjusted to include more line shots as the match went on.
“It’s a testament to these girls working together and implementing the entire roster throughout the season,” BHS head coach Terene Foutz said. “When the kids are subbing in and out in the postseason, they’re comfortable.”
Kirstie Hillyer led BHS with 30 kills, while Jenna Sirios had five blocks.
Katy Funkhouser finished with 13 kills, and Maddi Foutz had a career-high 37 digs.
Eaton (24-1) won its 18th consecutive match by also topping Lamar in Pool I, and No. 8 BHS (21-5) will be tasked with stopping the streak in the second match of the day Saturday.
The Pool I winner will play the Pool IV winner, and the Pool II winner will play the Pool III winner. The semifinals will follow the pool-play championship matches, and the final will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday.
