BHS boys basketball wins 47-42 at Piedra Vista

Queen scores 18 in season-opener away victory

Bayfield junior forward/center Cameron Queen drained two 3-pointers during a third-quarter breakout, and totaled a game-high 18 points as BHS pulled out a 47-42 win Tuesday night at Piedra Vista.

Able to erase an 11-7 deficit facing them after the 2025-26 season’s very first quarter, the Wolverines went into halftime dead-even with the Panthers at 15-all, then blew up for 17 points in the third and began the final frame up 32-28.

Senior Darian Watson and sophomore big Bowyer Carley then combined evenly for all of PVHS’ fourth-quarter production, with each netting a triple and booking seven points, but it wasn’t enough to help the Panthers (0-1 overall) protect their court inside Jerry A. Conner Fieldhouse.

Junior forward Tanner Vyborny finished with nine points for Bayfield (1-0 overall), scoring all after intermission, and sophomore guard Harrison Williams, despite playing with four personal fouls and missing all five of his free-throw tries, contributed six points.

Watson, meanwhile, ended up with a team-leading 17 points in defeat while Carley finished with nine. Junior Santiago Aranda chipped in seven points, and senior Juaquin Jojola (2-8 FT) six.

Piedra Vista dropped to 0-2 overall after its 57-53 overtime loss at Bloomfield on Friday, and the Panthers will face Clovis on Thursday at 8:15 p.m.

The Wolverines, meanwhile, will next travel to Blanding, Utah, to face 2A San Juan on Saturday at 2 p.m. Having played their first game this winter back on Nov. 21, the Broncos are 3-1 overall

SCHEDULE CHECK: Originally slated to host 5A Durango on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m., Bayfield will now welcome the Demons on Monday at 6 p.m.
