The Bayfield High School cheer squad took fifth place on Saturday at the southern regional competition in Pueblo sponsored by the Universal Cheerleaders Association.
The Wolverines were competing in the coed varsity competition, against lots of 5A schools who have experience in state and national competitions, said Annette French, the new head coach for the BHS squad.
This year's squad has 15 athletes, compared to the two who competed at last year's state competition, the first time in CHSAA state spirit history just two athletes took the mat.
"We have come a long way!" French said, noting how proud she was of her squad for holding their own against larger schools.
The team is now preparing for the state cheer competition on Dec. 8 and 9 in Denver.
