BHS done in from the spot

Wolverines stumble to the finish line, wait for postseason announcement

Pagosa Springs striker Johannah Laverty ended the longest unbeaten streak of the season Friday with a penalty kick.

“There was a questionable call at the edge of the box,” BHS head coach Jen Zelinski said. “I was surprised it was a PK.”

BHS (10-4-1, 9-2-1 3A Region 5) lost 1-0 in Pagosa Springs after tying Center in its previous contest.

The Wolverines hadn’t lost since a 4-0 setback against Alamosa on April 17. It was the Wolverines’ second consecutive game being shut out after they found the back of the net at least twice in their previous four contests.

“We didn’t have the heart we had the first half of the season,” Zelinski said. “They outhustled us, but we were on their half the whole game.”

Bayfield’s regular season is over, and they will await Sunday’s postseason bracket announcement.

“We should still go to playoffs. It might lower our seeding,” Zelinski said. “We’re all disappointed at the loss and a little bit shocked. We have to learn from it and move on.

“Now all that matters is what happens from here on out.”
