Not having a road win felt odd for the Bayfield High School football team as the calendar shifted into October.
The Wolverines fixed that with a 27-12 victory Friday night at Coal Ridge.
Mixing up the carries on offense allowed Bayfield to keep the Titans off balance and its offense moving.
Three Wolverines combined for the game’s four touchdowns.
Brody McGhehey and Zane Phelps ran for scores, while Phelps and Tae Heydinger caught touchdown passes.
BHS (4-2, 3-1 Western League) held an early two score advantage before Coal Ridge (0-6, 0-4 WL) cut it to seven points.
The BHS defense stepped up from there.
BHS currently sits in third in the conference standings, trailing Olathe and Gunnison by a game.
“We wanted to win and keep our conference championship aspirations and playoff aspirations alive,” BHS head coach Gary Heide said. “We needed to go on the road and accomplish something for that.”
BHS will play at Gunnison next week, then will host Olathe on Oct. 18 before ending the season Oct. 25 at home against Pagosa Springs.
“Everything’s going to be tough,” Heide said. “We play three great opponents; we have to be at the top of our game to win those games.”
