There was no intimidation when the Bayfield High School girls basketball team played CHSAANow.com Class 3A No.2 Pagosa Springs.
Just dominance.
Pagosa Springs (16-0, 6-0 Intermountain League) scored inside early and often in its 64-34 win over the Wolverines on Friday night in Bayfield.
Taylor Strohecker led that charge with 20 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the floor.
That opened up the Pirates’ 3-point shooters, who made 6-of-12 from behind the arc, led by Anissa Lucero, who made five and scored 15 points.
BHS (6-9, 1-5 IML) held pace with the Pirates through the first quarter, only trailing 18-12.
The Wolverines’ defensive scheme kept the margin manageable until their offense began to sputter.
Pagosa Springs outscored BHS 14-4 in the second quarter to claim a 32-16 advantage at the half.
“We were forcing it too much when we should have settled down,” said Jessie Roukema, daugther of Jerrin and Shane Roukema.
Roukema also had six points, eight rebounds and an assist in the game while providing a spurt of energy in the second half.
“I thought that I needed to pick it up for my team,” Roukema said.
Senior Haley Clarke also provided some second-half oomph for BHS. She led the team with 10 points.
“She’s a good leader on the team,” said Jaida Ross, daughter of Gene and Jamie Carlson.
The Wolverines now have lost four out of five games after winning their Pine River Rivalry game Tuesday at Ignacio High School, but the Wolverines can move quickly. BHS will host Centauri at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
