The Miners just kept tunneling into the Bayfield High School girls soccer team’s lead.
Twice the Wolverines got the go-ahead goal Saturday in Telluride, and twice Telluride answered for a 2-2 tie, which is where the game stood after a scoreless overtime.
“Very aggressive, very back and forth, lots of opportunities on both sides – it could’ve been anybody’s game easily. Both teams wanted it,” BHS head coach Jen Zelinski said.
Jaida Ross scored first on a free kick, but “not more than two seconds before halftime,” the Miners got a free kick of their own to tie it at intermission.
In the second half, Effie Nistler scored the Wolverines’ second goal on a penalty kick to jump ahead.
“Then, we kind of just had a little breakdown, and someone was unmarked and shot it outside the box and scored,” Zelinski said.
Although Bayfield beat Telluride 2-1 earlier in the season, the tie leaves the Miners atop the Region 5 standings at 9-1-1 in league. The Wolverines (10-2-1) are in second at 8-1-1, their Region 5 loss coming 1-0 at the feet of Alamosa in mid-March.
BHS will play Ignacio at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Ignacio, then will host Pagosa Springs at 4 p.m. Friday at Wolverine Country Stadium to wrap up the regular season.
