BHS girls soccer gets ahead with their heads

Friday was header practice for the Wolverines.

The Bayfield High School girls soccer team scored two second-half goals on headers and beat Region 5 rival Center 6-0 at Wolverine Country Stadium.

BHS head coach Jen Zelinski said after the Wolverines scored their first four goals, she mandated they only attempt to score on crossing plays.

It was good practice.

“Just a lot of team play,” Zelinski said. “Getting the ball outside, crossing it back in, which comes in really handy when we start playing teams like Telluride – knowing they’re not allowed to just dribble the ball forces them to play more as a team.”

Grace Harvey scored first about a minute and a half into play on an assist from Effie Nistler. Then Nistler, Maddy Duran and Nistler again tallied scores to make it 4-0 before halftime.

Jordyn Harrison and Andrea Zelinski scored the second-half headers on crosses from Jaida Ross and Nistler, respectively.

“It gives me a chacne to move people around and kind of prepare for the future,” coach Zelinski said.

BHS (7-2, 5-1 Region 5) will play a rematch with Center at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Center.
