Being sought for college pole vault is Bayfield's Katie Hawkins, and the Wolverine senior did little to diminish that confidence with her 9'0" best at the Aztec Invitational on April 22 and 23.
First place was denied her as Aztec's Naomi Teasyatwho cleared the height in fewer tries. Hawkins' five second-place points went well towards BHS' seventh-place meet total of 29-two more of which came from junior Emily Bauer's fifth-place 8'6" in the event.
Aztec's winning 100 was 29 more than 4A Durango, and 48 more than 4A Bloomfield.
Bayfield junior Amber Johnson placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles' preliminaries with a 52.24-second clocking, but then improved her status up to second-behind only 3A Farmington Navajo Prep's Monty Larvingo (51.31) in the final with a faster 51.98 to score five of the crew's points.
The 4x100 relay of Isis Gonzales, Tori Tate, Tymbree Florian and Jade Sanders ran a 56.16 to place fifth, while the 4x4 (Gonzales, Johnson, Olivia Keitz, Bridget Goddard) sped to third in 4:30.41. In the 800 meters, Goddard finished sixth, earning one team point for her 2:35.54.
Florian and Bauer went 4-5 in the long jump, soaring 15'1.5" and 15'1" respectively and garnering five team points, and Mikayla Barnes was a top-10 finisher in both the discus (eighth, 90'9") and shot put (ninth, 30'5").
The 4x2 relay of Bri Marr, Mylee Sanders, Hannah Whitmer and Jade Sanders was also a top-10 unit for BHS with a 2:05.91 performance, as were Gonzales in the 400 (tenth, 1:05.60) and Florian in the 100 (tenth, 14.24).
Up next for the Wolverines will be Saturday's High Altitude Championships in Alamosa.
