The phrase "it's only a matter of time" couldn't ring any truer than at a track-and-field meet.
But after laying down an impressive, first-place 50.16-second pass in the 300-meter hurdles' preliminary rounds at last weekend's Aztec Invitational, Amber Johnson had to sense she'd sliced off quite a lot of time while pacing the eight-runner field in the event's final.
Because indeed she had.
Bettering Jackie Shaw's school-best 47.60, set in 2003, Johnson's afterburners propelled her to a winning 47.17. That was eight-tenths of a second faster than 4A Navajo Prep's Monty Larvingo and 1.83 seconds faster than 5A Kirtland Central's Kambree Pierro, and helped propel the Wolverines to a meet championship.
BHS' 70 points was seven more than the hosting Tigers, and 4A Durango (58.5) took third.
With a new school-record 5'7" high jump, Jordan Lanning also tied the Fred Cook Memorial Stadium-best. Lanning's jump was an inch higher than Myra Dean's 2010 old school record. Her winning jump also was 7 inches higher than Pierro, 9 higher than 5A Farmington's Alyssa Simmons and 11 higher than AHS' Hailey Funk.
Bridget Goddard won the 800 meters in 2:29.35, dominating second-place Ashley Thomas of 5A Gallup Miyamura by 5.5 seconds and third-place Anna Smagacz of 4A Durango by 6.8.
Johnson also won the 200 (26.84 seconds) and finished second in the 100 (13.13), while Lanning also took first in the 100-meter hurdles (16.27) and long jump (16'1").
Mikayla Barnes' 101-foot, 8-inch effort in the discus garnered seven first-place points, while Tiarra Christensen's 101'1" held up for second place and earned five more points for the crew - as did Lanning's 32'0" triple jump. Barnes also took fourth in the shot put (33'4"), Tymbree Florian placed fifth in the long jump (15'5.5") and Courtney Bayles took sixth in the shot (29'7").
Up next for Bayfield will be the High Altitude Challenge Saturday in Alamosa, while Ignacio will hit the 59th annual Bloomfield Invitational. Both meets will begin at 9 a.m.
IHS managed just four points and a 13th-place team finish, with Azala Perez, Kiana Valdez, Rachel Cooper and Jaylynn Herrera placing fourth in the 4x200-meter relay (1:57.97).
