Taking 57th overall out of 96 teams, and 28th in the "Very Small School" category, the Bayfield High School Knowledge Bowl team members are pleased with their national performance in Chicago.
Four boys on the team competed at the 2018 Small School National Championship Tournament last weekend.
Bayfield was one of three Colorado teams competing at the national championship, and the team finished the preliminary rounds with a 5-5 record.
Bayfield's shot at the playoffs ended when they lost to Stockton from Missouri in round 13.
"As expected, our boys represented Bayfield with grace and style," Coach Roxanne Henderson wrote in an email to the Times. "I am very, very proud of them. They also had a wonderful afternoon sightseeing throughout the city of Chicago, and created some lifelong memories. I can't think of a group of young people I would rather coach and travel with!"
Attending the national competition were Collin Jackson, the team captain, and Rock Wageman, A.J. Swenk and Andrew Stumpf.
Quiz bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for teams of four students. Quiz bowl teams use buzzers to answer questions about science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports, and popular culture.
The Traditional Public division champion was the A team from Glasgow High School from Kentucky. The Open division champion was The Early College at Guilford Greensboro, North Carolina.
The 2018 SSNCT (Traditional Public) field featured 96 teams from 19 states. Overall, 159 teams competed in different categories at the event.
National Academic Quiz Tournament organizes the premier middle school, high school, and college quiz bowl championships in North America. In addition to its national championships, NAQT provides questions to invitational tournaments, league championships, and television shows throughout the year.
