BHS matmen finish 3rd at Piedra Vista

Wolverines post 3-1 duals mark

All Bayfield needed - or needs - was just a little more manpower.

Solid in Pool 'C' victories over 5A Bloomfield (score of 45-24), 5A Gallup Miyamura (44-30) and overwhelming against undermanned 1A Monument Valley, Utah (63-6), the Wolverines came up just short in the final-round "Gold" bracket at last Saturday's Piedra Vista Panther Classic in Farmington, N.M.

Meeting 5A Los Alamos in the championship-deciding top tier, but contending for third place overall at the 6A Panthers' 16-team tournament, the Wolverines wrapped up the 2016 side of their schedule losing 41-37 to the Hilltoppers inside Jerry A. Conner Fieldhouse.

Twenty-four of Los Alamos' points (compared to only six of BHS') came the easiest way possible: Four forfeits.

Otherwise, Coach Cole Baughman's bunch was outstanding.

Senior 120-pounder Cody Speece was 3-0 during pool-phase work, as were 138-pounder Jake Sandrey, Chris Kane at 152, Macoy Michaeli at 170 and heavyweight titan Sam Westbrook. Shane Moore improved his event record to 3-1 with a 6-3 victory against Los Alamos at 160 pounds, and Kane then climbed to 4-0 via a 9-1 major-decision win.

Garrett Beebe's pin of a Hilltopper at 132 pounds left him 3-1 at the one-day spectacle, and the senior trio of Westbrook, Speece and Michaeli also notched pins to New Mexico undefeated. Colby Baker (106), Colby Joosten (126) and Daniel Westbrook (182) each went 2-1 prior to facing LAHS.

PVHS' varsity defeated in-town rival Farmington High School 51-15 for first place in 'Gold' competition, and first overall.

Fifth overall and atop the 'Silver' bracket was 2A Moab, Utah, Grand County, followed by Piedra Vista's 'Silver' roster, 5A Kirtland (N.M.) Central and MHS. Bloomfield finished ninth but won the 'Bronze' bracket over A-4A Pojoaque (N.M.) Valley, 5A Grants (N.M.) and 2A Dolores.

A-4A Santa Fe St. Michael's took the 'Copper' title and placed 13th overall, ahead of 2A Ignacio, MVHS and 2A Mancos.
