Olathe couldn’t hang with a full-strength Bayfield High School baseball team Tuesday.
The Wolverines cruised to a 13-0 run-rule win in five innings in Olathe. The Wolverines received major contributions from players on Bayfield’s state-qualifying basketball team.
Junior Zane Phelps returned to the diamond for BHS with a 2-for-3 day that included a triple and three runs batted in.
BHS senior Matthew Knickerbocker collected three hits in four trips with a double and three RBIs.
Junior Brody McGhehey picked up the win on the mound for the Wolverines, throwing three shutout innings. He also went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring four.
Noah Loutherback hit two doubles for the Wolverines and drove in a run.
BHS junior Kelton McCoy’s only hit of the day traveled the longest for BHS – a three-run homer.
BHS (1-1) bounced back from a tough first game against Piedra Vista’s junior varsity team by scoring two runs in the first inning, three in the third and fourth and five in the fifth to end the game. “We kept it pretty steady,” BHS head coach Jonathan Qualls said.
The Wolverines snapped a four-game winning streak to open the season for Olathe (4-1).
They next will play at the Pueblo County tournament on Monday.
