BHS scrambles against 4A Scorpions in 4

BHS volleyball might only be one match removed-as of Wednesday's deadline-from last Thursday's wild five-gamer at home versus 4A Durango, but Head Coach Terene Foutz might be seeing the 'Fear Us!' psychology inherent in that night's 'Bayfield Blackout' t-shirt promotion truly taking effect.

"We really knew we were going to have to pursue everything. And in this game it was 'home' territory, obviously, so we wanted to show everybody who we were," junior Emily Bauer said after the battle. "And I think we did a great job. We were playing to win, not playing to avoid a loss-that was Terene's quote to us!"

"I think we had a breakthrough tonight, and I think that's going to carry out with us."

Farmington certainly saw this thinking made manifest Tuesday night, and the Wolverines avenged the 15-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 10-15 loss to DHS with an 18-25, 25-20, 25-17, 26-24 road win inside Scorpion Gymnasium.

Foutz particularly noted the performances of Bauer-in a middle-blocker role rather than libero, where she'd been utilized while recovering from a right-arm injury-and sophomore Jade Pascale in the victory. The win came after a serious gut-check when FHS had BHS down 23-19 late in Game 4.

"Jade Pascale had her best match on record," Foutz stated in a post-match commentary e-mail, as Pascale and junior Maddi Foutz downed 16 kills between them.

"After that PV game (at Piedra Vista, Sept. 8) Terene definitely told us, 'You will fight for your spot,' so everyone has to compete for what they want," said Bauer. "I think everyone's pulling their weight."

Bayfield-still 'Receiving Votes' in the CHSAANow.com Class 3A poll-improved to 3-5 (0-0 3A Intermountain) overall, while Farmington fell to 0-4.

Up next the Wolverines host 5A rival Piedra Vista on Sept. 22. Results from last night's trip to Aztec (3-4, 0-0 1-5A going in), were unavailable at press time.
