Noting that 11 of her 16 varsity players had cracked the goal-scoring column, Bayfield head coach Jen Zelinski stated at last Wednesday evening's team banquet inside the BHS Cafetorium with equal volume another key-if not crucial-statistic from the Lady Wolverines' 2014 season:
Just as many had been named either First Team or Honorable Mention CHSAA Academic All-State for their classroom work.
Holding a grade-point average exceeding 3.6 were seniors Sonja Fleming, Grace Harvey and Margaret Grayson, sophomores Maddy Duran (the team's Golden Boot recipient for her 11 goals), Sydney Milner, Kate Brennan and Emily Peinado, and freshmen Taylor Morris and Madison Ludwig.
Senior Jaida Ross and junior Meaghan Mooney were honored for having GPAs between 3.3 and 3.59.
Ross (four goals) and Fleming led BHS' First Team All-Southwestern League honorees, joined by sophomores Duran and Bryannah Isiordia. Mooney (five goals), the Silver Boot winner for her team-high five assists, received Honorable Mention All-SWL, along with classmate Andrea Zelinski (four goals and four assists.)
Brennan, the Lady Wolverines' Australian foreign-exchange student this year, was voted Bayfield's Southwest League Sportsman-of-the-Year. (One playe was selected from each team in the league.)
Ross was named BHS' Most Valuable Defender, and Morris the Most Improved Player in what certainly had to be close calls over freshman goalkeeper Kailee Millard (9 shutouts) for both.
Centering the pre-match shout sessions, Harvey was a near-unanimous choice for the Team Spirit Award, while Grayson received the Coaches' Award for her year-to-year dedication and improvement.
Fleming (two goals, two assists) was declared the varsity's Most Valuable Player, and after a team vote agreed to by assistant coach Dave Foster, sophomore defender Alyssa Knapp was named the JV's MVP.
