BHS still working for league title

Girls earn draw at Telluride, win at Ridgway and home

TELLURIDE - Bayfield threatened to brutally grab control of first place in the 3A/2A Southwestern League last Friday in Telluride.

All that was lacking was luck. Sophie Turner scored a goal for Bayfield in the 14th minute of the match. Maddy Duran and sophomore Savannah Kaufmann repeatedly took shots from outside Telluride's 18, but nothing got past until Kaufmann finished a Duran feed in the 42nd to tie the physical clash at 2-2 going into halftime.

THS goalie Whitney Wells came up with save after save, finishing with at least 20 after making five before intermission, but BHS thwarted attack after attack as well. If it wasn't junior goalie Kailee Millard making the play, a Bryannah Isiordia header was a fine means to stop seniors Kenzie Zaumseil (who'd scored in the 38th), Madie Alexander and others.

Unfortunately neither side would book a 'golden goal,' though a perfectly-placed near post denied Kaufmann a shot which bypassed Wells, and after two OT periods the test ended in the 105th minute of elapsed time.

On Saturday, the Wolverines made sure to handle business at middle-of-the-pack Ridgway with a 4-nil victory.

Junior Lenka Doskocil buried sophomore Misty Helton's deflected early effort to gain Bayfield the upper hand. Helton (credited as assisting Doskocil's goal) later scored to put the visitors up 2-0 at the break. Duran increased the advantage to 3-0 in the second half, and Kaufmann secured the win with a goal too long in coming.

On Tuesday, Bayfield slayed Alamosa at home in a 10-0 match that was called early for the mercy rule. The girls end their season at 7 p.m. tonight under Wolverine Country Stadium's lights versus Ignacio.
