BHS takes down heavyweight in Aztec

3A Wolverines win Rumble in the Jungle over 5A Fruita

Punching two classes above its weight didn’t stop the Bayfield High School boys basketball team’s win streak Friday in Aztec.

The Class 3A Wolverines beat Class 5A Fruita Monument 48-44 in the Rumble in the Jungle, finishing the round-robin tournament 2-0.

“It was a hard-fought game. Both teams were sound defensively, for the most part,” BHS head coach Jeff Lehnus said. “It was a well-earned victory.”

Junior Taed Heydinger led BHS (7-1) with 15 points, while senior Conner Kennedy scored 12 and junior Zane Phelps added 10.

The Wolverines won with their second-lowest point total of the season and only shot 39 percent from the field as a team.

Phelps grabbed a team-high eight of Bayfield’s 26 rebounds.

BHS trailed by three at halftime and five entering the fourth quarter before scoring 18 in the final frame to close out its fifth consecutive win.

Heydinger scored 13 of his 15 in the final frame to help key Bayfield’s comeback.

“He did a great job coming off the bench,” Lehnus said.

The Wolverines play at Alamosa at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 to open Intermountain League Play.

“It’s a good way to be finishing up the preseason schedule,” Lehnus said of the win. “We’ll have next week to prepare, and here we go.”
