What to do with a full 11 days off?
For the Wolverines, it's a dynamite opportunity for some R&R-rest and (reworked) repetition. The former objective needs no explanation, but the latter kind of became a necessity recently in the wake of an unplanned development: a knee injury to linchpin Maddy Duran.
Fortunately for Bayfield, last Friday's trip to neutral ground in Gunnison to meet provisional 3A/2A Southwestern League member Crested Butte Community School was the first outing with the senior midfielder out, possibly due to damaged cartilage. And even more fortunately, head coach Jen Zelinski found a capable stand-in, Sophomore Savannah Kaufmann. She's a fine field player in her own right but more commonly identified as BHS' option in goal should something befall junior incumbent Kailee Millard. Taking a reported 11 shots, Kaufmann made all of the Wolverines' goals in a 4-0 blanking of the Titans.
Senior Bryannah Isiordia had two assists and sophomore Sophie Turner one, and Millard secured the shutout, making two saves as the Wolverines improved to 6-1-1 overall while remaining 4-0-1 in the SWL.
CBCS dipped to 1-3-1 overall in the program's maiden campaign.
Next on the schedule for Bayfield will be a short trip on Tuesday, April 19, to Ignacio for a 7 p.m. start.
