BHS volleyball roars back to defeat Piedra

Girls take third at Lewis-Palmer

Using last Saturday's Lewis-Palmer Invitational as solid preparation, the Lady Wolverines made sure Tuesday night not to repeat most of the mistakes that had been their undoing in the first go-round against 5A Farmington Piedra Vista.

The result? Sweet revenge-a 25-13, 26-24, 16-25, 25-18 victory, bumping BHS up to 6-2 overall. Tuesday night's match topped a hard-earned week's worth of recovery and practice time before beginning a four-match homestand Sept. 16 against 5A Farmington's Lady Scorpions.

Senior middle Kirstie Hillyer smashed a team-best 22 kills for the Lady Wolverines, and sophomore Maddi Foutz recorded a team-best 16 digs to keep the Lady Panthers (2-2) honest. Senior outside hitter Brittney Hutchison, for example, managed just nine kills for a less-energetic PV.

Last weekend, the Wolverine girls won three matches and lost one in Monument. The girls defeated 4A Montrose 25-23, 20-25, 17-15 for third place. Lewis Pamer had a 25-12, 25-13 pool-play triumph over Bayfield at the nvitational, but BHS managed wins over 5A Northglenn (25-13, 25-15) and 4A Windsor (25-23, 25-20) to bring about the final-round pairing against Montrose.

Lewis-Palmer, #14 in the nation in this week's MaxPreps.com Xcellent25, lost Game 1 to 3A Gilcrest Valley in the first-place bout, 22 to 25, but recovered with 25-12 and 25-4 fury to avoid the Lady Vikings' upset bid.

For the Wolverines, 5A Aztec comes up on Sept. 18. Bayfield then gets into 3A Intermountain League play with visits from Monte Vista on the Sept. 20 and Alamosa on Sept. 25.
