BHS wins 3 on Front Range

Pirates, Savages, Mustangs all fall to Wolverines

Everyone knows a great way to avoid being cold is simply to keep moving.

And take it from the Bayfield Wolverines.it works.

Resistant to the weather pounding northern and central Colorado late last week, BHS baseball not only managed to get all three of its scheduled games in, but picked up victories in each-defeating Colorado Springs St. Mary's, Lamar and Manitou Springs-for an ideal entry into Spring Break.

Senior Zane Phelps went 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and three RBI to help Bayfield hold off late-charging St. Mary's 12-10. The Wolverines led 9-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning during the Thursday game, and finished the road trip 9-for-11 with eight RBIs as BHS also downed LHS 10-5 and MSHS 7-5.

Senior Kelton McCoy was also scalding with his bat, with a 4-for-4, 2-RBI effort against Manitou the following afternoon also making him 9-for-11 (with five RBIs) all told. Used mainly as a catcher last year, McCoy's pitching held Lamar in check as he whiffed 11 Savages in 6.2 frames to earn the win on the hill earlier in the day.

Phelps (2.1 IP, 3 K) was the pitcher-of-record in the finale against the Mustangs. With four innings worked (5 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) to his name, senior Brody McGhehey got the win over the Pirates on the trip's first day with Phelps fanning five in two innings of relief.

When all was said and done, the Wolverines-ranked fifth in the CHSAANow.com Class 3A poll going in-had improved to 4-2 overall (still 0-0 in the Intermountain League) while St. Mary's slipped to 3-1, Lamar (ranked #3 at the time, and averaging 13 runs per game) to 4-1 and Manitou Springs to 1-2.

Senior Logan Sabinski went 1-4 against SMHS with two runs and also drew two walks, and continued his steady play by going 2-3 with an RBI versus LHS and went 1-4 with three runs scored against MSHS.

The Wolverines rapped 40 total hits in the outings, with McGhehey's 3-for-5, 2-RBI effort in Colorado Springs and senior Noah Loutherback's 2-for-4, RBI game at MSHS also notable. Senior Taed Heydinger's earned 1-for-2 (a double) with three walks against SMHS.

Resuming work after some well-deserved time off, BHS will visit 5A Aztec on Tuesday, April 5, then host non-league 3A Olathe Thursday and the 5A Farmington (N.M.) Piedra Vista JV on April 9.
