Approximately 175 cyclists will be pedaling along several highways and county roads between Durango, Silverton, Pagosa Springs and Wolf Creek Pass for five days next week beginning on Monday.
The inaugural Colorado’s Ride will take place Monday to Friday, with cyclists hitting the roads between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day.
The Colorado Department of Transportation and the Colorado State Patrol urge drivers to be prepared to share the road.
On Monday, the cyclists will travel from Durango to Silverton along U.S. Highway 550.
On Tuesday, they will go on a Durango loop, using U.S. 550, U.S. 160 and Highway 172.
The bikers will then pedal from Durango to Pagosa Springs on Wednesday on CO 151 and U.S. 160.
On Thursday, the cyclists will head from Pagosa Springs up U.S. 160 to the top of Wolf Creek Pass and back.
The five-day ride will then conclude on Friday with a ride from Pagosa Springs back to Durango on U.S. 160.
Motorists are encouraged to stay alert and share the road with cyclists:
Focus on driving and avoid using cellphones and other personal devices.
Slow down and keep your eyes on cyclists and pedestrians.
Cyclists have a right to use all the roads in Colorado unless expressly prohibited.
Pass with care and keep track of cyclists in your rear and side mirrors.
Cyclists shall obey traffic laws – you’re a vehicle, too!
Ride with the flow of traffic.
Ride single file at all times and pass other bicycles quickly.
Scan the road, anticipate hazards and communicate your moves to others.
Use hand signals to alert nearby vehicles to turns or lane changes.
