The same ol’ same ol’ beat the Durango Demons on Friday in Montrose: one bad inning for a one-run loss.
Valor Christian beat the Durango High School baseball team (7-8) 12-11 in the nonconference game on a neutral site.
“They had the big inning in the fourth,” DHS baseball head coach Rob Coddington said. “A few walks, a couple of errors, and they had some hits.
“It’s not happening all game but in little bursts. If we can eliminate those bursts, then we’ll be all right.”
Durango scored four runs in the first inning.
The game was tied at 4 and 6.
Valor Christian scored six in the fourth, then “after that we shut the door,” Coddington said.
“We chipped away to get back in it but just couldn’t quite get there.”
Blake Dunlap started for DHS and allowed eight runs on five hits in three innings pitched. Ben Wiley allowed four runs on four hits in four innings of relief.
Connor Dugan went 4-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored and a home run. Jeremy Szura went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two runs and two runs batted in, and Dunlap went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and a pair of RBIs.
“The rest of our lineup was tough outs,” said Coddington, whose team will return to SWL play next week. “We’ve been in it offensively all year long. I’m proud of the way we battled.”
