Two errors and a dropped third strike helped the Grand Junction High School baseball team score eight runs in the fourth inning Friday against Durango. The Tigers also hit four doubles and a triple in the inning, which gave them a 11-0 lead on their way to a 12-5 win.
The Demons’ bats woke up after the big inning, and they scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth to keep the mercy rule from going into affect.
Liam Southerland reached on an error and advanced to third on a couple wild pitches in the bottom of the fourth. Devin Davidovich then smacked a single to bring Southerland home. Matt Pane and Brady Hansen walked to load the bases, and AJ Folk hit a 2-RBI single.
DHS added a couple of runs with four base hits in the fifth. Michael Benner singled, and Southerland beat the throw to reach on an infield single. Davidovich then brought in another run with a single, followed by an RBI single from Hansen.
The Demons weren’t able to catch Grand Junction in the next two innings, but they’ll get another chance on Saturday. Durango (2-10, 0-1 5A/4A SWL) and GJHS (4-8, 1-0) will play again at 12:30 p.m. at DHS.
The Durango High School girls soccer team stayed perfect on the year with a 2-0 victory over league for Grand Junction Central on Friday at DHS.
“I think they played well; overall it was our best game,” said DHS head coach Melissa Halonen. “We kept the ball under control, switched our points of attack and were making good decisions.”
The Demons got their first goal with 17:04 remaining in the first half. On a corner kick, Sarah Somrak centered the ball into Central’s goal box, and Mason Rowland headed it into the net.
Rowland scored the team’s second goal in the second half. After a low free kick into the box, Emery Miller flipped the ball up to Rowland who got on the end of it.
Durango pressured Central a lot besides that, but was unable to add to its lead.
“We didn’t score as many goals, but we looked like a good soccer team,” Halonen said.
The Demons will return to the field right away, hosting Montrose at noon Saturday at DHS.
Harvest Dobbins made a save right before time expired, sealing a 5-4 for the Durango girls lacrosse team over Montrose on Friday.
“The defense played a solid game and really made Montrose work in every possession,” said DHS head coach Eric Elliott.
Annabel Carithers scored three goals to lead Durango. Victoria Barletta and Silvia Bosmans also scored a goal apiece.
Dobbins made seven saves on 12 shots, but none was bigger than her stop at the end.
The Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team was also home on Friday against the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. The Skyhawks only trailed 5-4 after the first quarter, but UCCS won the second 7-0 and went on to win the game, 20-6.
