Another day, another regional split.
The Durango High School softball team split a doubleheader Saturday against Palisade in Grand Junction, winning 6-2 and falling 5-3 in Game 2.
A big seventh inning lifted the Demons in their Game 1 victory. DHS scored five times in the final frame to turn a 1-1 tie into a 6-1 lead. Palisade answered with one run in the seventh but got no closer.
“The bats came alive. All of a sudden, we found some confidence,” DHS head coach Mike Cioppa said. “It’s a very elusive thing, confidence, in this game.”
Augusta Brockus allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in seven innings to pick up the win in the circle for DHS. Lexy Vidunas had three hits and drove in a run, while Rebekah Ford was 2-for-3 and drove in a pair for DHS.
Five runs in the first inning were all the Bulldogs would need in Game 2. The Demons scored two of their own in the first before adding a run in the seventh.
“It was our nemesis,” Cioppa said. “We had an inning where we didn’t make enough plays, so they scored some runs.”
Vidunas took the loss in the circle, allowing just one earned run on five hits. She also scored twice. Mercy Lashway was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Cindy Kobrin had two RBIs.
Durango will return home to host Montrose at 3 and 5 p.m. Wednesday at Aspen Field.
