Durango High School boys basketball coach Alan Batiste was happy to see balanced scoring and a big game from his big man in the season opener.

The Demons (1-0) hit the road to open the shorted 2021 season and secured a 62-40 victory at Telluride (0-1).

Walter Stauffer score six points and blocked three shots and helped the Demons grab 34 rebounds as a team.

That helped the Demons change the game on their defensive end of the court, where they also had 14 steals.

Anthony Flint led the Demons with 13 points, while AJ Carlson finished with 11. Jasper Zastrocky scored another 10 points, while Sam Johnson scored eight.

“It was just nice to have a change of competition and see some new faces,” Flint said. “I think we were able to push ourselves a little harder than usual.”

DHS will host Centauri at 6 p.m. Tuesday before it will host Bayfield, Ignacio and Montezuma-Cortez in next weekend’s Southwest Classic tournament.
