Classes are set to resume Tuesday at Big Picture High School after the building was closed for a month to repair water damage.
In early January, a main drain pipe became blocked and caused water to pool on the roof. The water followed crevices and moved through walls to pool in crawl spaces. Classes were moved to Durango High School after the Jan. 7 leak closed the building.
“The abatement is complete,” Durango School District 9-R spokeswoman Julie Popp said Friday. “All hazardous material has been removed.”
Minor work such as painting remains to be done but should cause no distractions when Big Picture’s 90 students return, Popp said.
There is no class Monday, Presidents Day.
The Liberty School, housed above Big Picture at 215 E. 12th St., doesn’t plan to return. Housed in temporary quarters at Animas Air Park, the school is looking for a new home.
Big Picture Principal Alain Henry welcomed the return Friday in a news release: “We appreciate your support of our staff and our students, as we had to make quick accommodations following last month’s water issue. While all students have shown great flexibility and resilience, we are all excited to head back to our school.”
