Just when I thought I’d seen almost everything!
While my dog and I were out for a leisurely stroll on the Animas River Trail, a young woman riding a bicycle whizzed by me. I saw that she was not only riding “no hands,” but in her upright right hand was a phone, and she was looking at the screen.
What is so important that it required such behavior? If she was looking for exercise, not a pleasurable scenic ride, she could’ve done the same thing on a stationary piece of exercise equipment and not put the safety of others using the trail in possible jeopardy – how irresponsible!
While I’m at it, I’ve been wondering for some time why Durango doesn’t require bicyclists, including regular bikes and motor-assisted bicycles which are now coming into vogue, to pay a license and registration fee and carry some liability insurance to use our public roads?
Maybe some of the revenue could be used to try to teach them the rules of using the roads, and maybe use a little of that money to provide them with an inexpensive rubber bulb-type horn to use as a warning device.
A casual acquaintance walking the river trail some time ago told me she was hit by a bicyclist approaching from behind; fortunately, she didn’t sustain injury requiring medical care. The bicyclist didn’t even stop to see if she was okay. Unacceptable.
