The city of Durango has enlisted the support of more than 70 volunteers to sit at strategic street corners during the morning commute to count bicyclists and pedestrians as part of the biannual bicyclists and pedestrian count, which is part of the National Documentation Project.
The nationwide project is to count those on foot and bikes just like automobiles are counted.
The numbers help define those using the roads in Durango, and they are used to pursue grants and funding for transportation projects, said Amber Blake, director of Transportation and Sustainability for the city of Durango.
Volunteers such as Matt Klausmeier, who sat from 7 to 9 a.m. on Thursday at 15th Street and East Second Avenue, helped with the count.
“It’s important for me to support and inform this program as part of Durango’s culture and community,” said Klausmeier, who is bicycle commuter.
