Earth to Durango City Council: Quit trying to fix what isn’t broken.
This city can’t afford this council’s so-called improvements. Why on earth would anyone want to create a one-mile-long traffic jam on Eighth Avenue and College Drive for several hours every day? (“Changes coming; City Council wants dedicated bike lanes,” Herald, Dec. 24.)
Many residents can’t afford to be delayed in traffic congestion. We have jobs to get to, grocery and other shopping that needs to be done, appointments to get to, deliveries to be made, maybe even kids who need to get to school. Our clients and customers need to be able to get to our businesses without undue hassle. Mail delivery anyone? We want ambulances to be able to respond in emergencies. It might be handy if fire trucks could get to fires quickly enough to put them out. The bike lanes that would be created already exist.
I know that it is perfectly legal to smoke pot in Durango, but perhaps our city councilors should stop long enough to start making rational decisions. Spending $200,000 on an unneeded traffic study – and that’s only a partial cost of planning and design – is not rational. Durango could feed a lot of unicorns with that money.
