Biking is hazardous to our health

I read the article on the issues pertaining to the Animas River Trail and bicycling in general (Herald, Sept. 3). In reality, we are not a bike-friendly town, not when you compare us to places like Bentonville, Arkansas, or Boulder.

Yes, we may be the mountain bike capital of the world, and well deserved, because we have a slew of mountain bike trails in the city. But for ordinary residents and families, commuting on bicycles to work, parks or the grocery store is hazardous to our health, let alone biking for pleasure up Florida or County Road 250.

The city is not safe for recreational cyclists. I propose designated, protected bike lanes on or near major roads in the city and county. More people would ride if the roads were much safer.
