Black ice leads to crashes in southeast La Plata County

Sand deicer used near Tiffany
The Colorado Department of Transportation used sand and deicer Tuesday morning on Colorado Highway 151 near Tiffany, where six crashes occurred as a result of black ice that formed on the road after a cold fog rolled through the area.

A mix of fog and cold air caused flash freezing Tuesday morning on a two-mile stretch of Colorado Highway 151, resulting is six traffic crashes near Tiffany, in southeast La Plata County.

When the fog rolled across the road, it developed a layer of black ice, said Lisa Schwantes, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The highway department sent trucks to sand the road and spray it with liquid deicer, she said.

None of the crashes resulted in serious injury, although, at least one was a rollover crash, said Capt. Adrian Driscol of Colorado State Patrol.
