While it may be noble for Josh Joswick (Letters, Herald, Aug. 21) to take responsibility for the reckless and irresponsible spending of La Plata County Commissioners Gwen Lachelt and Julie Westendorff, it doesn’t change the fact that these two commissioners wrote the checks that wasted our taxpayer dollars.
Joswick incorrectly assumes that every current taxpayer was a resident of La Plata County and should have protested when he and his cohorts were contriving the wasteful plans for which these commissioners spent our dollars.
Not every current resident was a resident at that time.
Joswick is apparently a big factor in the creation of our current problems, but he no longer, as a previous commissioner, holds the purse strings of the county coffers and can’t stop the outrageous spending habits of the current commissioners.
Joswick’s condemnation of a taxpayer, Chad Fox, for speaking out against out-of-control spending doesn’t say anything positive about his sense of community or open discussion.
Joswick points out that this reckless spending is just a campaign issue; it is, and rightfully should be.
As Fox pointed out (Letters, Herald, Aug. 14) these commissioners are going to ask us taxpayers to increase the spending limits on their county credit cards. Don’t do it! And don’t re-elect these two big spenders.
La Plata County has issues that need to be addressed responsibly. As Fox expressed so eloquently: Go Gwen, and take Julie with you when you leave.
