Multiple firefighting crews responded to a fire Thursday night at the Phoenix Recycling Center south of Elmore’s Corner.

The blaze was reported at 7:30 p.m.

Crews from Los Pinos Fire Protection District were the first to arrive on scene, where they found bundles of recycle material located outside the building engulfed in flames. Josh Lorenzen, deputy chief of operations with the fire district, said the material consisted of large stacks of bundled cardboard.

The flames from the cardboard scorched the facade of the backside of the commercial building. Crews also found fire in the interior of the building and fought in an offensive strategy.

Upper Pine Fire and Durango Fire protection districts provided mutual aid. Twenty-five personnel were on scene, along with two medic units, six tenders and three engines.

No firefighters or civilians were injured. Lorenzen said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

“They did have surveillance cameras and based on the video footage, the fire did start outside of the structure in one of the recyclable piles,” he said.

Efforts to reach Phoenix Recycling for comment were unsuccessful Friday.

Los Pinos fire district still had units on scene as of Friday afternoon, including a tender and an engine to help Phoenix Recycling with overhaul and to ensure all burn sources are extinguished.

Lorenzen said the fire caused extensive damage to the exterior of one side of the building and burned all of the recyclable material outside of the structure.
