BLM to burn slash on Animas Mountain

Army infantry veteran Mike Bremer with San Juan Public Lands Core lights slash piles in the lower portion of Animas City Mountain in 2010. The Bureau of Land Management plans to burn slash piles again this year on Animas City Mountain.

The Bureau of Land Management plans to burn slash as early as Monday on Animas City Mountain near Durango and on the Dolores Rim seven miles east of Dove Creek.

The Animas City Mountain project consists of slash left on 300 acres from tree thinning to provide defensible space for nearby neighborhoods.

Weather conditions and air quality will play a big role in whether burning can occur as planned.

Smoke may be visible at times, but it should lift and dissipate.
