The Bayfield Middle School track teams competed in the San Juan Basin League meet on May 7 at Durango High School, with the boys taking second place overall and the girls in third place.
Taking home first place honors were Wyatt Killenen, Jaden Vitagliano, Wyatt Witmer and Sloan Mazur in the 1600 medley relay.
Ryan Phelps won in shot put, as did Hunter Killough in discus. Mazur also won the 800-meter run.
Garnering red ribbons were Carl Heide in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump, and Phelps in the shot put.
Three relay teams also took second place:
4x50 team of Dax Snooks, Vitagliano, Killough and Marcus Isordia.
4x100 team of David Hawkins, Killenen, Grant Pierce, and Heide in a school record of 50.4 seconds.
4x400 team of Sloan Mazur, Dawson Heide, Pierce and Witmer.
On the girls' team, Mikayla Barnes won the league shot put title.
The 4x200 relay team took second, with Shaylea Freier, BriAnne Marr, Lidia Larson, and Savannah Kaufmann just missing setting a new school record.
The 4x100 relay of Jade Pascale, Freier, Larson, and Kaufmann set a school record a time of 55.63. Other top finishers were Sophie Turner, who ran third in the hurdles. The 1600 medley of Marr, Turner, Olivia Keitz, and Jessica George also took third place. Kaufmann was second in high jump and George was third. Kaufmann took third in long jump, Freier was fourth. Tiarra Christiansen threw for a third place in discus.
"Not only are these kids a great bunch of athletes, they are a tremendous group of human beings," said Head Coach Mark Pommier. "One of the many examples of this was when an athlete turned in his uniform and our managers were putting it away. They discovered a wallet full of cash and important information. The girls immediately turned it in to me and we were able to return it to its owner with everything intact."
Assisting Pommier in coaching this season were Frank Hawkins, Mellisa Kaufmann and Destry Heide.
