Isaac Peña did all he could do on the pitching mound, and his infield and outfield defense did everything it could do behind him, too.
In the end, No. 2 Hotchkiss defeated No. 3 Ignacio 3-0 on Friday at districts in Delta.
“We played well,” Ignacio High School baseball head coach Lupe Huerta said. “We played a great defensive game.
“Not bad for a 3-15 team vs. a 13-6.”
Peña pitched a complete game. He allowed one unearned run in the first inning and two earned runs in the third.
Huerta called the Bobcats’ defensive effort “phenomenal,” including a “great” diving catch by Anthony Manzares.
Ignacio, which scattered 10 hits in the ballgame, threatened in the sixth inning but “came up short,” Huerta said. IHS (3-15) had the bases loaded with nobody out, but a hard line drive was snared by a leaping catch, and Hotchkiss doubled up the Bobcats’ runner at third base. The rally was squelched.
