Bobcats climb uphill after Cortez

Rock-bottom was reached, and Ignacio struck it in Montezuma County.

Enduring undoubtedly one of the hardest nights in program history, the bedeviled Bobcats' 66 to 6 road loss to Montezuma-Cortez means now that any postseason hopes depend solely upon dominant showings in the 1A Southern Peaks. The loss leaves IHS 0-4 after a rough-by-design non-conference slate.

The first stop on the team's road to recovering its 2014 is tonight in Walsenburg against Southern Peaks newbies John Mall. The Panthers are on a two-game win streak after being bombed for 92 unanswered points in season-opening losses to Ordway Crowley County and Limon.

From reported statistics, Montezuma-Cortez collectively averaged a whopping 15.2 yards per rush last Friday, and their quarterback attempted just two passes, completing one to junior Austin Bayles for 50 yards. Junior kicker Ryan Gurney was 9-of-9 in point-after-TD kicks, and also hit a 37-yard field goal.

Ignacio's lone score came via an 80-yard Adison Jones-to-Chase Sanchez connection just after the midway moment of the first quarter, after which the 'Cats trailed 28-6. Mercy-rule timing and rules went into effect after halftime when M-CHS had a 43-point cushion. Cortez has cracked the CHSAANow.com Class 2A rankings at #10, replacing Bayfield as a result.
