Bobcats get ‘well-rounded’ win

Regional tournament awaits whether IHS wins or loses Saturday

Ignacio High School’s boys basketball rematch with Ridgway in the Class 2A District 3 semifinals was not the “boring” game the Bobcats won two weeks ago.

The Bobcats raced out to a 12-0 lead on the strength of their press and cruised into the championship game with a 66-49 win Friday in Cortez.

“We jumped all over them. We scored as many points in the first half as the whole game last time. That was pretty awesome,” IHS head coach Chris Valdez said. “Our press killed them early.”

IHS (18-2, 12-0 San Juan League) led 47-19 at halftime and worked its entire lineup into the game into the first half.

The Bobcats led by more than 30 at one point, and the lead shrunk when they put their bench in to rest their starters for Saturday’s championship game.

Ignacio’s starters paved the way, though.

Senior Adison Jones scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds dished out four assists and snatched three steals.

Wyatt Hayes canned five 3-pointers for his 15 points in addition to picking up seven rebounds, six assists and five steals.

“I don’t know what he’s doing – needs to step it up,” Valdez joked.

Tucker Ward joined them in double figures with 10 points, Anthony Manzanares scored nine and Nick Herrera eight.

“There’s some pretty good playin’ there,” Valdez said. “It was a pretty well-rounded game.”

IHS will await the winner of the other semifinal between Mancos and Telluride, who played the late game Friday. The game will start at 2:30 p.m. at Montezuma-Cortez High School.

Win or lose, the Bobcats are headed to Grand Junction, where the top three teams from District 3 will be re-seeded and matched up with other qualifying teams into two pools of four.

Two wins would advance them to state.
