Bobcats ‘squeak into’ the state finals

Adam Herrera, Christian Knoll, Blaine Mickey and Mike Perez are living right.

They make up Ignacio’s boys 4x200-meter relay, which snuck into the Class 2A finals, finishing ninth in 1 minute, 34.66 seconds Thursday at the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 2A Track and Field State Championships at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.

Tenth-place Highland was .07 seconds behind the Bobcats.

“We kind of squeaked into the finals. We were hoping to be better than we were,” IHS head coach Tony Kimball said. “We had a couple kids who hadn’t been up (to state) before; nerves got into them.”

Wyatt Hayes was eighth in the 2A boys long jump at 20 feet, 1.75 inches. He also took 13th in the 2A boys 400-meter dash prelims and did not qualify for finals.

Herrera finished right behind him in the long jump in ninth at 19-10.75.

Perez was 15th in the Class 2A boys 110-meter hurdles at 17.34 seconds.

Kelton Richmond took 12th in the 2A boys shot put at 42-01.75.

Christian Knoll was 15th in the 2A boys 100-meter dash prelims in 23.49 seconds, which didn’t qualify for the finals.

“(He) ran a very fast 200 even though he didn’t get into the finals,” Kimball said. “It was a tough event this year.”

IHS next will compete in the 2A boys 4x100-meter relay prelims at 9:23 a.m. Saturday on Day 2 of the state meet.
