Bodo State Wildlife Area closed to most recreation during winter

Access to the Bodo State Wildlife Area, a refuge for animals during the winter, is restricted.

The 2,900-acre property, on the west side of Durango, is a critical parcel for wintering big game. The area is managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and regulations limiting public access protect these animals.

The only recreational opportunities permitted during winter are: small-game hunting and foot-only access on the Smelter Mountain Trail, which can be used from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily from Dec. 1 to April 15. Dogs are prohibited.

The wildlife area is open for general-public use April 16 through Nov. 30. Anyone using the area illegally can be ticketed.
