Body of man discovered in tent west of city

A man was found dead inside a tent Wednesday about a half mile up a hill behind the Tech Center, west of downtown Durango.

The man’s identity was not released Wednesday evening pending notification of next of kin. He was described as a “middle-aged” man who lives in La Plata County.

Authorities learned of the deceased man at 12:37 p.m. from a hiker who saw two feet sticking out of a tent, said La Plata County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dan Bender.

The tent was located just outside city limits, he said.

He appears to be a homeless resident, said La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith.

The Sheriff’s Office was conducting a routine death investigation. There were no immediate signs of foul play, he said.

Members of La Plata County Search and Rescue were working to remove the man’s body Wednesday evening.

Another homeless man was found dead Tuesday between a home and a garage in the east 500 block of Fifth Street in Durango, Smith said. His name also was not being released pending notification of next of kin. No foul play is suspected.
