Body reported floating facedown in Animas River near southern Durango city limits

Law enforcement confirmed seeing a person in the water, but no recovery was made

Law enforcement responded to a report of an unknown person floating facedown in the Animas River about 7:35 p.m. Saturday near the La Plata County Humane Society in south Durango.

Officers from the Durango Police Department, La Plata County Sheriff’s Office and Durango Fire Protection District swift water rescue team responded to the call.

An officer confirmed seeing a person in the water, but the officer was unable to reach the individual, according to a Durango Police Department Facebook post.

The last sighting of the body was north of the Weaselskin bridge about 8 p.m. Saturday, according to the DPD Facebook post.

Emergency responders searched the river until dusk Saturday, staging personnel along the river banks. A drone was also used in the search.

Durango Police Department and other area resources searched from Durango past the New Mexico state line near Tico Time, according to a Facebook post from the San Juan County (New Mexico) Sheriff’s Office.

La Plata County Search and Rescue resumed the search Sunday. The Durango Police Department provided no further information as of 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
