J.K. Rowling is making waves in the Muggle world.
The author just announced that she is making a big donation to Better Together, a campaign against Scottish independence.
Scots are to vote in a referendum Sept. 18 on whether to break away from the United Kingdom after 300 years. In a lengthy blog post on her website, Rowling, an Edinburgh resident, outlined her views. She even went so far as to compare Scottish separatists to her “Death Eater” villains from Harry Potter .
“When people try to make this debate about the purity of your lineage, things start getting a little Death Eaterish for my taste,” she wrote.
“The more I listen to the Yes campaign, the more I worry about its minimization and even denial of risks,” she continued. “This separation will not be quick and clean: It will take microsurgery to disentangle three centuries of close interdependence.”
On her blog Rowling only noted that her donation to Better Together was “substantial,” but the Associated Press has confirmed from spokesman Mark Hutchinson that the donation was $1.68 million.
Rowling is not the first celebrity to take a side in the debate. Singer David Bowie and model Kate Moss have both come out against independence;http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2014/02/19/brit-awards-arctic-monkeys-david-bowie/5620223/ , while Sean Connery is in favor;http://time.com/12430/sean-connery-wants-scottish-independence/ of the split.
