‘Border has been issue for decades’

I read with interest your editorial on Jan. 3 that President Joe Biden’s reelection depends on his urgent action on the border. Yes, the border has needed action, however, this has been an issue for decades.

The last meaningful legislation was when President Ronald Reagan signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. 1986! The border policies have not been addressed through six presidents. Now, it is Biden’s fault?

There have been several reasons why the border has seen an influx of migrants. Climate change, gangs, despotic leaders and more (I studied this at Arizona State University). The graph of immigrants trying to cross the border has exponentially increased since 1980, and there is no end in sight.

The Democrats are working with Republicans to find consensus, but nothing will get done. Texas Republican U.S. Rep. Troy Nehls said as much recently with, “I won’t support border security if it helps Biden!” He said that no Republican will.

Nehls said the quiet part out loud! The Republicans intend to force our country into shutdown, deny Ukraine support, all so they can place the blame on Biden. All so that Donald Trump can win.

Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been putting forth actions to Congress but nothing has been done. It is the job of Congress to legislate. The issue lies squarely at the Republicans feet.
