The editorial pages had a letter, “Four decades of failure on immigration,” (Letters, Herald, Nov. 9) that really hit home on the subject of immigration.
Forty years ago, President Reagan gave amnesty to almost 3 million illegals in return for the Democrat-controlled Congress to fund and support border security. It didn’t happen.
In the past 40 years, neither Democrats nor Republicans have been able to create a comprehensive immigration bill that will please both sides. The last attempt still allowed 5,000 crossings a day and a quick path to citizenship.
The last administration allowed an estimated 11 million illegal aliens to cross our borders plus an unknown number of “got aways.”
At the same time of these illegal crossings, administration officials kept telling the public that the border was secured. That reasoning was probably the main reason Trump was reelected. Yet, 58% of La Plata county voters wanted to retain the status quo when it came to illegal crossings.
Those on the left may find the efforts of ICE to enforce the law distasteful and barbaric. By the same token, the left sat on its hands for the four years that created the situation today, as well as creating the opportunity for Trump to be reelected. Live with it.
