In support of the National Afterschool Alliance’s Oct. 28 “Lights On Afterschool” celebration, I wanted to remind the community that the Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County has partnered with Durango School District 9-R to assist with afterschool programs at four 9-R elementary school sites this school year.
For those who are not familiar with our organization, we have been in the community for almost 15 years (next to the Durango Community Recreation Center) providing a safe, supportive environment for all our community kids. We are staffed by trusted adult role models who know how to bring out the best in our youths through outcome-driven programs in a fun environment that ultimately builds better futures.
National studies show that our club kids have better outcomes around physical activity, avoiding risky behaviors, engaging in community service and a host of other good things. We do all this while ensuring that no child is denied access because of financial hardship. Not one.
If you know of a kid (no matter their family’s financial situation) who needs a safe place to make friends and be a kid when not in school, check us out at Bgclaplata.org or call 375-0010.
We welcome new club members to our programs that support academic success, the development of leadership skills and healthy lifestyles. We thank the parents who have shared their kids with us over the years, a partnership that has grown so many wonderful, young adults!
