A lightning break-in at the Fort Lewis College cashier’s office Sunday morning netted a burglar or burglars $9,200.
Campus police were alerted at 7:45 a.m. by their security company of an alarm sounding in the cashier’s office in Berndt Hall, campus spokesman Mitch Davis said Monday.
When they arrived four minutes later, officers found the back door had been pried, but no one was there, Davis said.
“Given how fast they got in and out, police think it could be someone with knowledge of the office,” Davis said.
Davis said the amount taken would be typical of the cash kept in the cashier’s office. He didn’t know what evidence police have gathered.
Campus police are working with Durango investigators, Davis said.
“We have thefts of bikes or laptops, but nothing of this nature in recent memory,” Davis said.
